Flyaways Under Stage Lights: How to Smooth Your Stage Hair

2 min read

Stage lights show every flyaway. You can spend an hour on your curls and still see a halo of loose hairs in your stage photos. That is not bad styling. It is bright light doing what bright light does. Here is why flyaways show up on stage and the last step that smooths them down.

Why Stage Lights Show Flyaways

Stage lighting is bright, and it comes from above. It catches every short or loose hair that stands away from your head and lights it up.

Prep does not help. Daily training, frequent washing, and a ponytail in the same spot every day are hard on hair, and dry hair is harder to smooth. Our posts on off-season hair care for athletes and using a hair mask during contest prep cover that part.

Hairspray holds your style in place. It does not make dry ends look smooth. That takes one more step.

How to Smooth Flyaways Before You Step on Stage

1. Finish your style first. Curl, set, and spray the way you practiced.

2. Use a drop or two of hair serum. Put it in your palm and rub your hands together.

3. Start at your ends. Smooth your hands over the ends of your hair.

4. Use what is left on your hands for flyaways. Lightly skim your palms over the surface of your hair where the loose hairs stand up.

5. Stop there. More is not better. Too much can make your hair look flat.

6. Check under bright light. Look at the front, the sides, and the back, the way the judges and the cameras will see you.

Practice this with your full stage hair before show week. Show day is not the day to try something new.

One rule comes first: keep hair products off your tanned skin, and ask your tanning team what is safe to use once your tan is on.
