Why You Need to Use a Hair Mask Two to Three Times a Week During Contest Prep

You plan every meal, every workout, and every detail of your suit. Your hair needs a plan too, because contest prep is hard on it. Here is why one hair mask a week is not enough during prep, and what to do instead.

What Contest Prep Does to Your Hair

  • A short food list. You eat plenty, but it is the same few foods week after week. A diet that restrictive can leave gaps your hair notices.

  • The water cut. Peak week pulls your water down right before the show.

  • The daily grind. Training, sweat, frequent washing, and a ponytail in the same spot every day.

  • Stage styling. Hot tools and hairspray on show weekend.

Put together, your hair can end up dry, dull, and quick to snap, right when you want it to look its best.

Why a Hair Mask Two to Three Times a Week

Conditioner is a quick step that smooths the outside of the hair. A hair mask is a deeper conditioning treatment that stays on longer. In everyday life, once a week may be plenty. During prep, your hair is under more stress than usual, so it needs that deeper conditioning more often. Two to three times a week helps keep your hair conditioned through the hardest weeks.

How to Use a Hair Mask During Contest Prep

  • Two to three times a week, work a hair mask through clean hair from mid-lengths to ends. Leave it on for the time on the label, then rinse.

  • Condition at every wash.

  • Once your hair is styled, smooth a hair serum over your ends and flyaways to keep your hair smooth and beautiful.

  • Start early in prep. Do not wait for peak week.

What you eat and drink is between you and your coach. Your hair routine is the part you control from the outside.
