Off-Season Hair Care for Athletes: Sweat, Daily Washing, and Ponytail Breakage
Show season is winding down, and for a lot of competitors that means off-season training is ramping up. Your body gets a recovery season. Your hair should too. Between daily workouts, sweat, constant washing, and the same tight ponytail every day, training takes a real toll on your hair.

Hair Care for Athletes Starts With Wash Day
When you train every day, you probably wash every day. That's fine, as long as you treat your hair gently while you do it.
Use a gentle shampoo, and focus it at the roots where sweat and oil build up.
Condition every single time you wash, from mid-lengths to ends.
On rest days or light days, a quick rinse with water can handle sweat without a full shampoo.
Give Your Ponytail a Break
The same tight elastic in the same spot every day puts constant tension on the same section of hair.
Move your ponytail higher or lower from day to day.
Swap tight elastics for a soft scrunchie.
For long training sessions, try a loose braid instead.

Never Sleep on Wet Hair
Hair is at its most fragile when it's wet. After an evening workout, try to let it dry, or mostly dry, before bed, and keep your nighttime style loose.

Off-Season Is Recovery Season
You'll spend the next few months building your physique for next season. Build better hair habits at the same time, and you'll walk into prep with hair that's ready for the stage.
