Dry Hands From Lifting: A Simple Nighttime Hand Routine

2 min read

Lifting wrecks your hands. Chalk, knurled bars, and washing your hands all day will do that. Calluses are part of the deal, and most lifters are proud of them. Dry, rough hands are a different thing, and you can do something about those. Here is why you get dry hands from lifting and a nighttime routine that takes two minutes.

Why Lifting Dries Out Your Hands

Chalk. Its whole job is to dry your hands so you can hold the bar. It keeps doing that job until you wash it off.

Friction. Bars, dumbbells, and cable handles rub the same spots on your palms every session.

Soap and sanitizer. Good gym hygiene means washing your hands a lot, and that dries skin out.

Prep. You cut back on water close to the show, and your skin shows it.

It matters on stage too. Your hands are in every pose, and dry patches on your hands can grab extra tan color. Our hair and skin care game plan for competitors covers that.

A Nighttime Routine for Dry Hands From Lifting

1. Wash the chalk off after you train. Use soap and water, then dry your hands well.

2. Leave your calluses alone. This routine is not about getting rid of them. It is about keeping the skin on and around them from getting dry and rough.

3. Use a body butter at night. Take a small amount and work it into your palms, the backs of your hands, your knuckles, and around your nails.

4. Do it last. Put it on right before bed so it stays on. Cotton gloves help if you want them.

5. Never before you lift. Body butter on your palms and a loaded bar do not mix. Keep it for nighttime.

6. Repeat every night. Consistency is what counts.

One rule comes first: your tanning company will tell you when to stop using lotions and butters before your tan. Follow their instructions exactly.

Where Dolly Wally Fits

Dolly Wally is the hair and skin care line being developed on a Texas Hill Country ranch by the founder of Bambi Bikini Connectors. Our Whipped Body Butter is in development now. It is a thick, whipped butter, the kind this nightly routine calls for. It is not available yet. It is the same jar and the same habit as our post on dry heels in clear stage heels: heels and hands, every night.

Your hands do the work in the gym, and they are in every pose on stage. Give them two minutes at night. Join the Dolly Wally list at DollyWally.com to follow along and be first to know when the body butter launches.
