How to Detangle Hair After a Show: The Morning After Stage Hair
The morning after stage hair is its own event. You wake up in the hotel with yesterday's curls, a full can of hairspray, and a few pins you forgot about. Your first instinct is to grab a brush and get it over with. Do not. Here is how to detangle hair after a show without a fight.

Why Stage Hair Is So Hard to Brush Out
Stage hair is built to last. It is curled, pinned, and sprayed in layers so it holds from prejudging through finals.
Hairspray dries stiff and sticks strands together. Then you slept on it.
It has been a while since wash day. You washed your hair before your tan, the day before the show, so that style is sitting on hair that was last washed two days ago.
A brush pulled down from the top pushes every tangle into one knot at the ends. That is how hair snaps.
Here is what you need: a few clips, a wide-tooth comb, a leave-in detangler, and a hair mask for afterward.

How to Detangle Hair After a Show
1. Find the pins first. Feel through your hair with your fingers and take out every pin and clip.
2. Work in sections. Split your hair into four or more sections and clip the rest out of the way.
3. Mist one section with a leave-in detangler. Give it a minute to soak in.
4. Start at the ends. Comb the last few inches with a wide-tooth comb until they are smooth, then move up a little at a time.
5. Use your fingers on knots. Loosen a knot with your fingertips. Do not force the comb through it.
6. Wash it. Once you can comb through every section, shampoo to clear the hairspray. Shampoo a second time if your hair still feels coated. Then condition from mid-lengths to ends.
7. Finish with a hair mask. Work it through clean hair from mid-lengths to ends, leave it on for the time on the label, then rinse.
Take your time. Twenty patient minutes with a comb is better than two rushed minutes with a brush.
