Contest Prep Skin Care: How to Keep Your Skin Moisturized

Yesterday we covered what contest prep does to your hair. Your skin goes through the same thing. If it feels tight, dry, and dull the deeper you get into prep, here is why, and what to do about it.

Why Contest Prep Dries Out Your Skin

You eat plenty, but it is the same short list of foods week after week. You train hard and shower every day, sometimes twice. Then peak week cuts your water. Put together, your skin can lose moisture faster than it gets it back.

Contest Prep Skin Care Is About Moisture, Head to Toe

For your body, use a body lotion or body butter right after your shower while your skin is still a little damp. Lotion is the lighter choice for mornings. Body butter is richer, so save it for night and for your driest spots, like elbows, knees, and shins.

Your face needs the same care. Use a daily moisturizer in the morning and a richer cream at night.

Do it every day, not just when your skin feels dry. In the final days before your tan, follow your tanning artist's prep instructions.

Two Ingredients Worth Knowing: Castor Oil and Lanolin Oil

Castor oil is about 90 percent ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that helps draw moisture to the skin and slows it from evaporating. Lanolin oil is a rich emollient that softens skin and slows water loss without sealing it off completely. Put simply, castor oil helps bring moisture in, and lanolin oil helps hold it there. That is why we like them as a pair. One note: if you are sensitive to wool or lanolin, skip lanolin products.

Where Dolly Wally Comes In

Dolly Wally is the new hair and skin care line from the founder of Bambi Bikini Connectors, a former figure competitor. Castor oil is already in the whipped body butter and the overnight recovery cream we are developing, and we are testing it in our body lotion now. A lighter daily moisturizer for the face is in development too. Nothing is for sale yet.

Join the list at www.DollyWally.com and you will get early access when products launch.
